Videography by Matt Ward at www.visualsofscotland.co.uk
Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

I was very involved in our Pike's Peak Highland Society in the 80s and 90s until it went defunct in the early 2000s. We hosted the Pike's Peak Highland Games for many years. Internal squabbles pretty much ended the Society. Looks like everyone in attendance there with you had a great time Bruce, and that's what matters.

In America, they cancelled the tug-o'-wars after people were killed by broken cables. It's like they don't understand Scots. That's part of the appeal, like watching NASCAR in the South. You think people go to see cars go round and round? No. They go hoping for a crash. Death or the chance of it is what makes us feel alive.

A tremendous Highland Games crowd there, Bruce! I see they are as popular there as they are in North Georgia here in the States! BTW, they took out the tug of war at the games here for about ten years because the last three had ended up with fights over alleged cheating by the winners!😃 Several folks got pretty banged up at the last one, so they banned it for a few. Last I heard, the recent games have all ended in handshakes, so we've finally retained our good Southern manners on field - at least with our hands! The parking lot may still be another story... 😆

I love going to the one here in Middle Tennessee, but it gets a little thinner each year. Often I am the only Shaw there and certainly don't have a tent and banner to set up. I do get complements on wearing my tartan sash with my traditional Cherokee regalia, which is a bit of a boost. People should take pride in their heritage even if it's back a few generations, but also need to do their homework and learn the actual history and culture so as to properly honor it.

I live in Nova Scotia and I identify more as Scottish, through my ancestry, than Canadian to be honest. On my mother's side it was all Highland Scots from Isles of Lewis and Harris and MacNeils from Barra up until my mother married my father (his ancestry was all over the place, British and French way back, but his grandmother was a Scottish War bride (WW1). They alllived in Cape Breton. The highlands of Cape Breton look a lot like some areas of Scotland. I can see why my ancestors settled those areas. My maternal grandmother still spoke strictly Gaelic as a child until she went to school and English was forced on her and her siblings. My great grandmother didn't always understand me. She'd ask my great uncle what I said at times.

In the legendary words of the late John Mann, “there’s none more Scots than the Scots abroad.” 😂 I’ve been to games that have had a tug o’war here in Ontario before. I think each games is a little bit different. Not by much, but little things. Specific traditions, degree of formality, etc What I tend to enjoy most is when each individual band practices in random locations through the day. It’s nice to be walking around and come across a circle of musicians playing together, and sometime a dancer will join and preform some highland dancing in the round. Good times always.
